If you have never driven commercial vehicles before you may choose to start with a Category C1 vehicle. This is a rigid vehicle with a gross weight of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes. The training and test for a Category C1 vehicle is the same as the Category C but the vehicle is smaller.

What is required?

You must:

  • Have a minimum age of 18
  • Have passed the Category B (car) driving test
  • Have passed the LGV/HGV theory test

When you have passed your Category C1 theory test and decide to move onto Category C, you will not need to do another theory test.

Normal duration of the course is 3 to 5 days and includes use of tachographs, drivers hours etc.
